Constantin Leonhard (*1989 in Cologne) studied Scenic Research at the Ruhr University Bochum with Prof. Sven Lindholm and Media Arts at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne with Prof. Mischa Kuball. He works in various constellations, the kollektive ZOO and as a solo performer at the interfaces of performance art, post-dramatic theater, movement improvisation, video art and installation.
Through interventions in public space, he opens up frozen urban territories for dialog. They also serve as a starting point for further processing in order to illuminate the fractured edges of current discourses in multi-perspective settings in theaters and exhibition-situations. He sees performance and art as a contact surface, an anchor to the environment, a counter-algorithm and a magnifying glass with which new details and perspectives can come into focus. He confronts themes in an exploratory manner in order to explore structures and relationships with an open mind. The link between art and theory/science plays an important role in collaborations with natural scientists and humanities scholars, whereby he is preoccupied with the difficulties of this relationship. His joy lies in inviting an audience to trace the findings of his research in atmospheric situations and translate them back into poetry. In doing so, he combines seemingly disparate areas into collages of texts, movements and objects: spirituality with science, political protest with everyday banality and, at the moment, above all the ecological crisis with hope. For him, performative situations are communication, a dialog at eye level and an invitation into shared spaces of thought.
As co-director of the collective ZOO and as a solo artist, his works have been shown in theaters, exhibition spaces, museums and film festivals: tanzhaus nrw, Ludwigforum Aachen, studiobühneköln, Labor am Ebertplatz, Kunsthafen Rhenania, Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz, Freie Werkstatt Theater, Galerie Koppelmann, Rottstraßen 5 Kunsthallen and various public spaces.
He is co-curator of the Blicke Filmfestival des Ruhrgebiets and part of the PAE Aktionslabor.
In 2022 he was part of the Christoph-Schlingensief-Fellowship of the Szenische Forschung / Kunststiftung NRW.
