CONSTANTIN LEONHARD

Constantin Leonhard (Schädle) was born in Cologne in 1989, graduated with a master's degree in scenic research and studied at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne, where he helped design the urban stage seminar as a tutor of Mischa Kuball. He conceives performances for urban and theatrical spaces. Claudia Bosse engaged him as an assistant director for theatercombinat and as part of the Impulse Festival he worked with Nature Theater of Oklahoma on the project Germany Year 2071. His solo works have been seen at studiobühne köln, tanzhaus nrw, Ludwigforum Aachen, Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz, Freie Werkstatt Theater, Labor am Ebertplatz, Galerie Koppelmann, Rottstraßen 5 Kunsthallen and various public spaces. Since 2015 he is an active member of the performance lab PAErsche and was nominated for the NRW Bank Kunstpreis in the category Performance in 2019 and 2020.

From his original work in theater, Constantin Leonhard develops questions about the relationship between audience, spectator and space. Triggered by discourses on hierarchies reflected in theater, he focuses on performance and video art as a means of expression. The extent to which artistic practice is a political process, what it does and what it works against and for, moves him in his current works, which are intended to open up a broad associative space in order to confront the viewer with his or her own views. As part of the kollektiv ZOO he realizes works with means of documentary, installation and choreography. Collaborative experiments with contrary aesthetics and conventions, seek within the works of Kollektiv ZOO the radical, poetic and quiet contradiction to renegotiate the relationship between political bodies, places and narratives.
